I gotta agree, 'Read them or I'll ban your arse!' does sound more comical that anything to me, and I really do think anyone who takes offence at it probably won't really be at home here.
I think it sets a good tone for the site. It does to me make it feel less formal too, which is always nice - formality for me suggests an uptight nature at times. To be fair, that's mainly due to many bad experiences with strange wargaming societies, but meh.
