Some time ago Trygon & I were discussing ideas for how to keep NewGen's topics more on topic without having to nitpick or lock a thread. I think we agreed that if the thread reached page seven and was no longer on topic a new thread about the new topic would be made. This way we only have one community thread. We don't intend to lock off topic threads, just start new topics for the new conversation. Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Do you think we should set the prerequisite to be a lower page number in the thread or if it should apply to any off topicness? In my personal opinion, the off topicness needs to dominate half a page (10 posts) in order to be viewed as off topic.
The thread Your Desktop Background is a prime example of a thread gone sour. It can be salvaged. But it'll take a new thread about sexuality to do so, understood?

Accounted for. "The Housekeeping" says that thread titles ought to be changed if the topic evolves. no real need for a new thread... just a name change and an asterisk to state (this was not the original topic).

What do you want to rename the GG thread? Do you see where I am going with this yet?

Thing is, once a thread starts going off topic, it doesn't really get a new topic. It just becomes inane conversation about everything under the sun. We'd just end up with 60 threads called 'talking about random shite'.

I think we should intervene with reminders to save the topic by encouraging new topics to be started or linking to the Community Thread. Also; sticking the Community Thread. The Community Thread is supposed to keep small talk from other threads, and we should push it forward as that.
Our best bet though is pushing forward topic creation. NewGen has lots of posts for a few topics. People should be willing to go out there and create topics so that we don't stack discussions in the same threads.

I think Yori would be pleased at this attempt at self policing.
That should speak volumes.

Thlaylie, we already know your feelings regarding this matter when it was on the Hive. I hope you aren't going to try to convert this thread into your personal soap box and then get pissed when no one agrees with you like last time. Haha!

Calm down children... Thing is, once a thread starts going off topic, it doesn't really get a new topic. It just becomes inane conversation about everything under the sun. We'd just end up with 60 threads called 'talking about random shite'. I'd argue against that. Seems the dream thread was created after the GG thread became the Dream thread. GG could have easily been renamed "Dream Thread" but it's one of the staples and there'd probably just be a new one started... defeating the purpose. I do need to do that sort of train of though thing more. Mind you, changing the name would work for smaller threads. Ah well, not as though I'm the only one with half baked ideas. Cough, balls system. Yeah... I'm for the idea. Start a new thread, making sure people know it's a progression from an off topic discussion so it's not just a dead stop n start. Should work, and it's hardly draconian. Highly beneficial, actually. EDIT: Stickied the community thread (would really like to get rid of "Funkatronic" too... make it more official) and removed the announcements about the rules and the balls. They're ineffectual.

Bro, this is NewGen, what's the point of official? I think this should be fun and casual, like a bunch of stoned people doing the conga.

Well, 'Funkatronic' is a horrible word. And ALL CAP titles are so last year.
