Right, while the purpose of creating New General was to free us all from oppressive moderation, there are a few common sense issues that need to be addressed.
There's no moderator calling the shots of their own accord here. Indeed, no one is a moderator and everyone's a moderator at the same time. As a community, it's what the community wants that counts and these guidelines are just obvious examples of things we obviously don't want. Most of them require people to be upset to be broken, so it's anyone's call as to what's offensive and what isn't. Just remember... this is the Internet. There's a lot that slides here that you might not like, but that's a fact. Get over it.
On with it then!
RULE 1: Don't piss people off
This is the Internet. You don't have to share the same opinions as everyone. By all means, debate, disagree and engage in playful pisstaking... but the moment you start annoying people is the moment the harmony is shattered. You become a liability to the stability of this site and anything that can topple this beautiful place is simply not allowed. Remember, things like racism, sexism and ageism have incredible potential to piss people off, and racism is indeed banned by the Proboards Terms of Service.
If someone's annoyed at you for something, evaluate why they might be annoyed. If you've offended them just apologise and things will go back to normal. If you think someone's being unfairly annoyed, tell me. It'll be sorted out in a way that is beneficial to the community.
RULE 2: Post warnings on your links if they are questionable
This is the Internet. There's no censorship here (within the limitations of Proboard's Terms and Conditions WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE READ!). I deem that links containing swearing, violence and other heavier themes to be quite fine.... as long as they're not real. That's also in the Terms of Service.
However, just because you've posted a link somewhere doesn't mean everyone wants to watch it. Some people might not like what's in the link, so it's just common courtesy to inform them if there's going to be anything that could be confronting in your links. This isn't a biggie, if there's something that's not got a warning but should then people ought to just say what it is once they've watched it. The person who didn't post the warning will be warned to warn in the future. Everyone's happy.
RULE 3: Don't post stupid shit
This is the internet. The average IQ is 38. As a citizen of the Internet you should be doing all in your power to raise this dismal level upward. To this end, don't be a bloody idiot.
Posting spam is stupid. One word posts that contribute nothing are stupid (for God's sake, at least say "I agree"!). Being an active troll on this forum is stupid, people will say that you're stupid, you'll lose respect and be treated like the trash that you are.
This one is just common sense really. Be more intelligent statements.
RULE 4: Type your damn words
Hell, you can dedicate a thread to posting in 1337 or bin rEl shrt wif u ritin if you want, but for the rest of the site you can type out words so people can understand you. Real words. "U" is a letter... not a word. Personally, I hate stuff like "lol" too... but this is the Internet, and I'm not calling the shots here (that'd be hypocritical), so it slides for now.
RULE 5: R.e.s.p.e.c.t. Find out what it means to EVERYONE.
You don't just come in here and arse around like you're the Queen of France! You have to start somewhere, and build up you credibility in the eyes of others. If you don't do this then don't complain when people ignore you or downright dislike you.
People who are hated by the community should do well to build their cred back up. Try participating, creating and being a nice person to interact with. That doesn't mean "be a freakin' fairy"... just have a go.
With this rule also comes a willingness to forgive and forget people who don't get it right on the first or second tries, or might lapse time goes by. After that... RULES 1 & 3!
Note that deviating from these will probably bring the question of public punishment to light. So you probably shouldn't.
Well, I think that's it for the *fingerquotes* "rules". Let's see how that goes down.
