Pretty simple concept here. If you have a favorite paper and pencil game post it here. Discuss it and maybe we can show people there is more then just D&D out there for the kids to play.
I personally love Legend of the five rings. Fun D10 system that is built around a pseudo-Japanese land filled with Samurai and Oni.
EDIT: Changed thread name a bit to help.

When I saw the title I was all psyched to confess my love of "Pen flick car rally"... but it ws not to be.
I've never actually played L5R.... but a lot of people have said it's quite good.

I like Dark Heresy, if you mean RPGs. However, on the subject of pen/paper games, anyone here ever played racetrack? Delightfully simple little game. While I could link you to rules, I've elected to write them out instead. Take a sheet of graph paper, and draw a track on it. It should be about 6-8 squares wide for the most part, although having choke points and wider turns is alright too. Do whatever you want with the track, but don't make it too complex. Something like: ... this should do. It doesn't have to be a circuit, you can have it cross over itself if you really want to... anything goes. Now, get a few pencils of different colours, and designate a starting line. All players pick a colour and a point (not square, point) on the line. Decide the turn order somehow, and get started. The name of the game is to be the first one to reach the finish line (or finish a few laps, depending on the track). Every turn you can speed up or slow down. Increase your horizontal movement by one, decrease it or keep it the same (you start at 0, obviously). Do the same for vertical. Example: My car starts the race. I decide to speed up horizontally while staying at the same speed vertically (not moving). I now move 1 space to the right. For the next turn, my current horizontal speed is 1, and my vertical speed is 0. Now I want to increase horizontal speed once more, so I move 2 spaces. I also want to move up, so I move one space up (diagonal movement). Next turn my horizontal speed is 3, and my vertical speed is 1. Now I want to slow down horizontally while speeding up vertically. I move 2 spaces horizontally, and 2 spaces vertically. Next turn both horizontal and vertical speeds will be 2. And so on and so forth. You cannot pass through a point occupied by another car, and if the car goes off the track, then you are eliminated (which leads to awesome games of chicken, to see who will go fastest towards the wall before slowing down for the turn. It's an awesome game which is really hard to explain but really isn't complex at all. EDIT: While I'm here, who's the one that gave me balls?

I believe it was made by the Manhatten Project in thier spare time.

Not exactly what I had in mind but hell it is played with just paper and a writing utensil so it fits the criteria. I enjoy dark heresy as well. Usually end up playing a guardsmen of one kind or another. I like the fantasy rpg as well(2nd edition not this confusing mess of 3rd.)

Ok, I see now. Yeah, pen flick car rally is quite different. We always joke about how interesting real races would be if they followed the pattern of pen flick car rally.
Don't worry Hosh, there are several people here I think who are L5R and the like. Discussion is imminent!

I love Dark Heresy/ Rogue Trader/ Deathwatch ( I use them collectively) I am an absolute 40k fanatic so I love being able to create my own stories in and be part of the 40k universe.

Doesn't matter the system as long as it brings about discussion. Share the wealth of RPG's. Also strategy games like battletech and the like.

A while back in uni, someone I knew had a game called "POOP". No, really. Here's how it goes: It's quite similar to Noughts and Crosses/Tic-Tac-Toe in that you have to be the person to spell POOP. Each player plays a letter on the board, either an O or a P, adjacent to one of the existing letters. The word can be made in any direction and on diagonals. It is played on an open paper. By this, I mean that the only constraint is paper size. Unlike Noughts and Crosses, where you generally only have a 3x3 board, you could potentially have an infinite game. It is surprisingly difficult if both parties are paying attention. Our longest game spanned 50 minutes.
One of the old favourites is Boxes. Love me some of that. I once took part in a three way game on an A3 sheet of paper. That took about two hours spread over three days (high school at the time). I think I won by about twenty boxes in the end.
Racetrack looks good.

Back when we were younger, me, my brother and my sister used to just make up our own D&D style games. Sure it wasn't perfect, but it's quite fun. I remember at one point I ended up as a warrior in pearl armour fighting a pair of dragons while my sister tried to freeze them with ice spells (my bro was the GM). Silly, but amusing.

Rather than creating a thread, I guess I will post. I recently found out a few of my Friends wouldn't actually mind playing some D&D/Other role playing games (I know D&D is a tad mainstream) So I want to ask you guys, what is a good sort of fantasy/Sci-fi role play game for beginners? I don't mind forking out some cash for things. But I don't want my first experience to be horrible!
So, Suggestions/Advise?
