Thread for Monster Hunter fans! Tri was amazing, just received Portable 3rd which is also amazing. Some of the new monsters are really great fights, though a little disappointed that the bear monster is such low tier. Deviljho is still my favorite by far. Lots of big weapon changes in Portable 3rd too. Hunting Horn changes are impressive, instead of playing the notes in a seperate "Playing" mode, you generate a note with each hit.

Well I could give you the obvious answer, it's a game where you hunt monsters. But I'll give you some detailed info! Basically, the game is set in a town where some things are going down and you play a fairly novice hunter. The games generally have no story beyond that. The strange things happening are always due to the monster on the front of the box for whichever game you're playing, for instance, Portable 3rd has a small town being rustled by storms of an exotic monster, or on Tri, there are large earthquakes being caused by a monster in the ocean. Once that monster is dead you reach the end of the "Story" but there is often tons more monsters to unlock and defeat.
The game works like this - You will generally be in the town most of the time. The town is instanced, it isn't a free roam game. To hunt monsters you have to take a contract from the village elder. There can be set conditions such as capturing the monster or killing the monster, and there are sub quests that ask you to collect useful items (To get you used to the layout of the maps and locations of items). All missions have a time limit (50 minutes). Once the appointed monster is dead, you're rewarded and taken back to the town.
The town is where you also make weapons and armor from monsters you kill. Different monsters yield different weapons so a monster that poisons you may unlock a paralysis weapon, a monster than breathes fire will yield a fire element weapon and a monster than just whacks you with brute force may have much higher raw damage. Armors also have skills dependant on the monster. A fast monster may have a skill that increases the frame of invincibility during a roll (The roll works on an invincibility frame like fighting games FYI) or a monster with special abilities like one of the new ones is an ability that causes the armor to burst into flame increasing your hunters stats for a small period of time.
If you plan on starting, Monster Hunter Tri on Wii is probably the best. Lots of good explanations about the game mechanics and not too many things thrown in your face. The old PSP/PS2 ones just sort of threw you in and lacked any real structure, they're sort of fixing that a bit. Also, the old games were great but theres only so much annoying hitboxes/glitches you can take. They're all gone in Tri. It's a very love or hate game and it requires a lot of patience to get good at. Some people hate that theres no lock-on system or monster health but most of the fanbase are accustomed to these things as they add extra challenge.

I hated the game... it was bland and repetitive to levels that make pokemon look fresh and dynamic.

I hated the game... it was bland and repetitive to levels that make pokemon look fresh and dynamic. You probably sucked at it then, that seems to generally be why people dislike it. Once you get to stages past collection it becomes one of the better games for gamers after a challenge. You can't call it bland due to the huge variety of choice in weaponry and repetition isn't present due to the huge differences in monster tactics. It isn't a hack and slash game, it isn't made for people who want a fast and furious game. It's more like a fighting game, you have to learn the attacks of all your opponents. Also, Deviljho eats monsters alive.

lol I love that argument. "You cannot see how awesome it is because you suck at it". Has about as much weight as "You do not like this thing I like so you must not have a life".

lol I love that argument. "You cannot see how awesome it is because you suck at it". Has about as much weight as "You do not like this thing I like so you must not have a life". You can't deny that you dislike a game if you're bad at it. This isn't true in every case (I'm terrible at super meat boy but love it), but when it's followed by two fairly bad points (That I addressed) I generally see it as the case. I don't want to hear the word opinion as it doesn't always apply when talking about content being repetitive or bland. Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation made some fairly similar points to Dangeresque before scratching the surface of the game. The game is complex, there is tons of variety in playstyle and there are many different monsters each requiring different tactics. Last but not least Someone always wants to bash this game for terrible reasons, so I hoped this would prevent it. Apparently not. P.S. Have a lovely Christmas!

oh this. this. hmmm. well, it was kinda sorta not extremely completely bland. there's a feature that comes with me though - things, many things, get very tedious very quickly. i like a bit of stimulation. this was as stimulating as dieing while you sleep.

Glad to know we have so many Monster Hunter fans. I don't see why you have to post though. I know it's kind of attention-seeking/troll posts when you come into a thread made for fans and say you don't like the series for whatever reason that isn't true, but I'm not going to agree with you. You're both missing out as far as I'm concerned.
Tell me, how far into the game did you manage to progress? Manage to kill the Velocidrome or was he too difficult?

Awesome. Glad to know gamers have patience to actually get past tutorials nowadays. Maybe a game like CoD would be better suited to you, you can jump straight into that without having to do any preparation. 50% of Monster Hunter is preparation.

Dude, criticising people's playing skills as a response to what is quite a legitimate complaint doesn't put you in a good light. You can't call someone else a troll for not liking a game, and having an opinion about it, especially when your response is even more trollworthy.
The problem with Monster Hunter is that it can be quite a grind, requires almost constant teamwork (and sometimes you just really want to solo), and ultimately it's not visually very appealing. There's such a thing as too much preparation, and the rewards don't always match the effort.
Personally, I don't think it's a good game. Deal with it.

You want to know what the problem is though? This ISN'T a thread for criticism. I stated in my original post that this is a thread for fans. Nothing infuriates me more than people destroying these threads with their own inflated opinion that I do actually give a toss about because I'm a fan of the game. They're doing it because they know this, like everybody does when it comes to these types of threads.
Just drop it. I'm being targeted here continuously even though I've done nothing wrong. "My opinion" is that he's bad at the game and gave up before it got interesting.
I enjoy the preparation aspect of the game. I love Minecraft because of the insane preparation side of it. The reward is perfectly fine.
I'm the type to raise the bar to the game. If I feel like soloing, I'll do it and overcome the challenge of the multiplayer monsters having extra health and stuff. I see people with this mindset in WoW too, a game made for multiplayer, whom want the game nerfed to their level because they can't kill a group boss. Monster Hunter is made for co-operative play, the offline is very easy to complete without any player teamwork thanks to new features like companions. Yes, they're addressing peoples complaints about soloing being unfriendly. You can now take 2 felyne comrades with you on quests who can paralyze, trap and do elemental damage. The game is still expanding to try and gain more players, at the end of the day it's a casual game for casual people.
I'm going to say this now though
I don't care what light I'm seen in if this is how the NewGen community acts. I'd rather not be a part of it. I don't come into your threads and rape your opinions, so I don't see why I should be treated differently. I've had small quarrels with Trygon about mechs but those were good fun to me, this isn't.

Look, I'm sorry if I was a little harsh, I was pretty tired and had a headache, so I probably overreacted.
But you have to admit, just because Dangeresque didn't like the game doesn't mean you have to basically insult him. You could've just disagreed with him, said that it's difficult to get into, and that he should give it another shot or something, but just turning around and saying that he's simply wrong because he's no good at it... well, you did pretty much ask for it.
I know people who don't like The World Ends With You because it's a nightmare to get used to play-wise, but I don't tell them they hate it cos they suck at it.
Again, sorry for my overreaction, but you aren't doing yourself any favours by simply slamming critics as trolls...

Dear dear... look at this then. Cinders and brimstone, the lot of it.
Calm down. I didn't like the game. I thought it was drawn out and repetitive. Thats it. There's no connotations to that. I didn't like it. End of story. Nothing is liked universally, understand that. By assigning a faux reason to affirm that there must be some reason other than personal taste to account why I did not like the game, well, that says more about your critical insecurities than about my skill and preference. I bet there's a lot of stuff I like that you don't.
Now, enough of this! Quite frankly, every internet arguement is just two unyeilding opinions smashing into one another and emerging unchanged or strengthened with no real result. So, I'll end it with a solid fact.
Nothing is liked universally.
So there.

I stated in my original post that this is a thread for fans. and now you exactly hoe many fans there are! but now you know exactly why i like FPS? i like a bit of stimulation. a nice personal RTS too. the reason i like good descriptive imagery from my books oh those written in the fiorst person. your there, it's actually stimulating. i didn't get this from fucking monster hunter. COD is alright but i like a bit of fiction. see, if a game needs a tutorial you get a simple summary of what the game is. when you get to the point where your enduring parts of a game instead of worrying about loosing what you've lost, you tend to want to take up less space of your hard drive.

Woah, was I in a terrible mood that day. First time I've been on this site for ages. Though I can sort of understand how and why the forum is dying. Trygon, I wouldn't call this a site for traitors and trolls, although I imagine a few people on the site are seen as trolls because of Yori. I've recently started posting on TTH again though it isn't as interesting as it used to be.
