You know what Poly, you're probably one of the only members I'd do this for.
From the Mod Board
This brings up three questions:
1) Do we keep the stickied threads? I say no. If the members want to continue with the gear grinder thread and such they can make it themselves. Also, I'm not so sure I want the community thread back either.
2) How do we solve the trolling problem? Resetting the board will delete all the troll's posts, but it doesn't keep them from posting again. Do we also ban them when we do the reset? Do we give them a last chance warning? Do we just hope they behave?
3) When should we hit the reset button? Obviously we wait until we've decided what to do about the trolls, but how long after that? Do we give the members a heads up that we are doing a reset?
Anyways, just something for you guys (and gal) to think about.
As I said before when this was previously put up, I definitely think that the Community thread should go. A hard reset of the general board seems like a reasonable idea too.
I do not know how to solve the trolling problem.
One idea, in combination with Question 3, would be to reset the general board.
Post a sticky message stating that we are resetting the sticky board to clear up the clutter and to change up the rules and/or strictness of our modding. We should have a fairly strictly adhered to policy to trolling. Something like 3 Strikes and you are temporarily banned... 3 Bans and you are out... but we should also give people warning that what they are doing is, in our eyes, trolling. Something like the Warning sticky here ought to do the trick: Post a link to the remarks in question and, if more than 3 mods think it is Strike-worthy, someone PMs the offender.
Of course... the problem with that is that it takes time and effort that many of us simply do not have.
Perhaps the issue is one of laxity? One troll starts, others try to get away with it.
I am not overly familiar with large group dynamics on internet forums. On some of the previous ones that I have been on, the troll is bleedingly obvious and is rightfully kept to a minimum damage level by the general reaction of the main posters... but I do not seem to see that work here, possibly due to the size and frequency of posting on this forum.
*shrugs*
More opinions when I think of them.
I'll be honest, there are several members that I'm just fed up with. And I believe all of them are on the general board. It's to the point that I want to hand out permanent bans to some of our more notable trolls.

While I'm at it the random thread is going away for good and the gear grinder/joy thread are not being restarted by myself or stickied if they get restarted by members.
The random thread is a bit of a nuisance.
I'll sticky them FOR NOW. Anyone has a problem, please feel free to unpin them.
Now go back and check the dates. I gave a months notice before I took any action. That's a whole month for The Hive Mind to step in. The only response I ever got back was a vague approval from the rest of the staff. I did everything by the book.
Some of you may know this, but I am a soldier in the United States Army. That means several things, one of which is that I know my place. In the five years I've been on The Tryanid Hive I have never disobeyed The Hive Mind or undid something he has done. Not once. And if I was a moderator on this forum I'd do everything that D says without question (which is academic here, but still true).
As for your temp ban, all I can say is that I'm sorry. If it was anyone else who banned you then there would be a discussion about it over on the mod board. But since it was The Hive Mind himself there's nothing I can do. If you choose to come back you are more than welcome, and if not then I understand.
As the lead moderator on The Tyranid Hive I take a lot of heat from members. Most of the heat that I take is from the actions of other moderators that are attributed to me, and usually I'm fine with that. I'd rather everyone not like me so the rest of the moderators can do their job than members just hating all the moderators. But I think that I need to set the record straight.
Which moderators give warnings before they locked threads? I did, unless it was a necro or restart of a locked thread I gave one every time. That includes the comic thread and stabby death thread (something that most people leave out). I've never went through a board and locked threads to keep them on topic.
Aside from the General board reset the only threads I've deleted in the past year were duplicate threads (as in double posted by the same member) and threads requested by the original poster to be deleted. If you think that I deleted one of your threads then check the other boards because it was probably just moved.
I'd also like to point out that other than a 3 day ban for Sal, I haven't given a ban outside the trade board. I honestly can't remember the last person I canned outside the trade board. If I was really as overzealous as some of you suggest then wouldn't it have been easier just to can the trouble makers instead of taking the general board back to square one?
On top of all that I usually give you guys a reason why I do or do not do something on The Tyranid Hive. How many other moderators do you know that give you reasons why the do something. That's because I respect the members of The Tyranid Hive enough to keep them informed as to why we do things. Transparency is something we do better on The Tyranid Hive than on most other forums.
Well, I must apologize to you D. I know I said I wouldn't be coming over here. And as a moderator I should know better than to bring issues from one forum to another. I will refrain from doing this on your forum again. But I do believe that Poly deserves answers.

With all the trolling that has been going on in the general board as of late I've been toying with the idea of reseting the whole board. Just deleting all to topic on the board and letting the members repopulate it.
This brings up three questions:
1) Do we keep the stickied threads? I say no. If the members want to continue with the gear grinder thread and such they can make it themselves. Also, I'm not so sure I want the community thread back either.

You know, the more I read the general board the less I feel we need to keep it.

Well, it's been three weeks now. Unless someone has an objection I'll be resetting the General board sometime this week.

Got a few messages along the lines of this:As the General Board has been wiped, Thlaylie and I have (separately) made the three "stock" threads of the board. Namely, the Joy thread, the Gear Grinding thread and the Community thread. Could you please sticky them when you get the chance?
Gear Grinding
Joy

No. We are not sticking any threads on the general board. If fact, I'm going to kill the community thread as soon as I get the chance.

I concur with not stickying those threads again. They seemed to embody what we're striving to avoid with trolling, flaming, lol-speak and general offtopicness. Now go back and check the dates.
